Stainless steel is essentially a low carbon steel with a chromium content of 10% or more by weight. The addition of chromium gives the steel its unique stainless and corrosion-resistant properties. The chromium content of steel allows a tough, adherent, invisible, corrosion-resistant chromium oxide film to form on the surface of the steel. If this film is mechanically or chemically damaged, it repairs itself as long as oxygen, even in small amounts, is present.
